Louis Keller is best known as the German-American New Yorker of wide social acquaintance who assembled and published the New York Social Register, which first appeared in 1886. The registry for the Metropolitan National Horse Show, held at the original Madison Square Garden on Madison Avenue and East 26th Street since 1883, listing its attendees and directors, formed part of the basis of Louis Keller's Social Register,on-line text which was far more inclusive than Ward McAllister's "Four Hundred," the number, reputedly, that could be accommodated in the ballroom of Mrs William Astor (Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor). In 1895, Keller founded the Baltusrol Golf Club on 500 acres (2 km2) he had bought in Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey. He organized the Rahway Valley Railroad in 1904 to transport passengers to his club.
